The couple of places I've been associated with you need a minimum of a state learners permit. The (level 1?) CAMS licence can be obtained on the day.

With Alan, you need a CAMS licence they don't even look at your DL. Same with if you hold an ANDRA licence
Obviously indivdual to the facility.
Cheers

Ok, around Brisbane you have a few choices of road racing/speed event facilities. These are:
-Queensland Raceway (about 30-40 minutes west of CBD), run by Queensland Raceways with AASA licencing.
-Lakeside Raceway (about 30-40 minutes north of CBD), run by QR with AASA licencing.
-Morgan Park Raceway (about 1.5-2 hours south-west of CBD), run by Warwick District Sporting Car Club with CAMS licencing.
-Mt Cotton Hillclimb (about 30 minutes south east of CBD), run by MG Car Club QLD with CAMS licencing.
Lakeside and QR often have 'Open Track Days' or 'Free Practice' days, where the track is pretty much open all the time. You will need a AASA Clubman Licence for approx $60 per year, but this is valid at both tracks. From this level you can also do sprints and drifting etc on this licence.
Morgan Park is run a little differently. They have open practice days most Wednesdays and some Fridays, which are covered by their own insurance policy. A motorsport licence (CAMS/AASA) is not required; you might need to have a road licence, but I don't believe this is the case. Most other events held at Morgan Park (Sprints, Car Club days etc) usually require a CAMS Level 2 Speed (L2S) licence. The L2S costs approx $80 per year plus membership of a CAMS affiliated Car Club, which is a good investment to have as you can meet other people with similar types of cars, and get out to their events.
The Mt Cotton Hillclimb doesn't hold open practices (that I know of), so you will need the L2S to run at the events held at that facility, be they driver training or time trials.
My best advice would be to find a car club in Brisbane that targets the kind of activity you want to do, join it and attend some of their events. You will absorb a lot more information better by seeing and doing, rather than reading up on the web forums. Get out there and have fun (SAFELY!).
P.S> Maybe avoid Lakeside until you've developed your skills a little bit - it can bite pretty hard if you're not paying attention.
