Hi guys, we have an E39 528i in the family ('99 or '00 I believe)
It has the TV screen with the sat nav, which is powered by a CD ROM in the boot of the car
The maps are getting a little bit outdated and I wanted to find out if a more up to date CD is available
I rang BMW and they were talking $519.75 for the "version 14" disc, but could not tell me what year it was from. I am only really interested in getting a disc from the last couple of years.
The price actually didn't surprise me - I'm kind of used to their shameless profiteiring
Does anyone know more about this? Is there a recent disc or have they stopped supporting / updating it?
pm me...
"I'm kind of used to their shameless profiteiring" is only that if you're on the receiving end!
Its a "well rewarded business opportunity" if it's your deal.
http://www.prestigesunroofs.com.au/ in Burwood sell a genuine disc at around $300 ish
I've also been looking for updates, what model nav do you have?
Mk4 nav use DVD maps while earlier units use CD's. I have installed a Mk4 unit from an '04 X5 into my '01 540 and it works well. My maps are V10 and I believe the latest is V15.
I found a few eBay sellers and here is a response from one a while ago, LOL the 'workshop edition' and the fact that a home made copy will damage your nav computer :

Hi
I have two options for you, BMW navigation disc V15 2009 (two weeks old release)
1. The official sell edition in the sealed case with manual instruction, cost is $550
2. The BMW workshop edition disc cost is $100,
The workshop disc is 100% working and undefined as genuine for your car (just no BMW label)
For your attention the home made copy not working properly and will damage your navigation computer after few month used.
The BMW workshop disc, has additional the BMW software to make it work right and protect the navigation computer from any damage.
Please let me know, what the disc would you like

Buy a TomTom or something for like $150, will be better than the bmw satnav in all respects and won't cost anywhere near as much to update the maps (about $90 a year). I was pissed when I realised my 540i didn't have satnav, but after reading the prices of the discs and the trouble people have tracking down recent maps I'm glad I have my trusty old TomTom.

I've actually got both, a tom tom in the e36 and BMW's mk3 CD based Sat-nav in the X5. The built-in version is far superior in a number of ways, IMO. it keeps tracking inside parking buildings (lol) using the gyros (?), it doesn't fall over amongst city buildings, and it finds the satellites much quicker on start up.
I ran the tom tom in the X5 along with a Garmin of a friend, and set the same destination on all three and they all gave a different path to destination with the Mk3 giving the best result.
I am running version 12 (IIRC) ad whilst it shows EastLink it won't use it to navigate.
Cheers
David
Agree with David .. although mine is a MkII and slower, using the cars telemetary is brilliant. I have a separate GPS for my other cars (ute, 4wd etc) but I really like the in car satnav. As you say ... you just need to get the maps! I tried my friends V14 and it didn't work in my 740iL so I will "operate" on it this weekend using my working V13 Cd as a guide and see what I can figure ....

thanks guys, but driving about with some ugly device suction cupped to the windscreen was not an option
Profiteering is right, car companies make the most profit from spare parts/servicing and from my experience with BMW so far they are up there with the worst of them.
$500 for a fkn DVD! What a rort! I'd rather have $500 in my pocket and a suction cup on my windscreen, but that's me.
