What an amusing thread!
I like how there's an assumption that people who buy BMWs are all car enthusiasts and they only buy them because they're "the ultimate driving machine". What a laugh. People buy them new first and foremost for their badge.
FWD: Make em to powerfull and hello Torque steer!
I just bought an FWD (Clio Sport)
It's not powerful by todays standards, but 124 kws in a 1000kg FWD makes for challenging take offs and mid corner acceleration, that I didn't experience in my 325i's (E30 and E36) with very similar power and in the E30's case, weight! The Clio farken handles, but FWD lets it down, it torque steers like a whore!!
I suppose I am just getting used to FWD!
Sideways the Only way to Be - FWD now! Strictly hand brakies and lift-off oversteer!

Ben.
Good shit bud, Some = 80% obviously with 1s.
Inc the 318s/pay for badge models, and that rate most likely increases.

hahhaah i loled!
this thread sure delivers!
I'm seeing a lot of comments along the lines of "FWD is fine for the 318/118/budget models, it's not like they're going FWD for the 130i/M cars".
Now, I'm not saying that I think they're going to go FWD with the 5 or 7 series any time soon, but should they find that the 3 series makes them more money as a FWD 318i, there is no way in hell the RWD M/335i/135i will be based on even remotely similar architecture as the budget cousin. FWD and RWD are very different, and you can't just switch this between models within the same family. Just look at Ford saying they can no longer keep the Falcon RWD as the next one will be based on global architecture.
Some may say this could be a good thing though. If the M3 and the 318i cease to have anything in common (and they don't share much these days), the M might be even more focussed, but also even less affordable.
I disagree. There are plenty of cars that have FWD/AWD, or RWD/AWD options on the same platform... like err.. the iX model 3 and 5 series BMW.
Ben.
Those are still longitudinally mounted motors usually a solution that has front axles going through or part of the engine oil pan assembly.
A full transverse application such as the mini would reap commercial benefits in the long term.

You can have a 750iL x drive for about AU$100k if you want also...

it was inevitable.
there is NO space in a one series boot
True that,
I still find a 1 to be a nicer drive in the tight stuff than my wifes' Maz 6 (some people do say they were a drivers car lol). Even with less power, run-flats and smaller rims. Imo mostly because it is rear wheel drive with great chassis dynamics.
For me it has to do with when and how you can put the power down in a rear wheel drive. Just feels better....
omg I better start saving...
