I think its a good idea as long as they keep the rest rwd.
They can't just let Audi and Mercedes have entry level luxury all to themselves, getting first time young buyers allows them to build a relationship which hopefully means these clients upgrade within the brand as they get older.

Matt, BMW have done AWD before and still are (not just the X series). You could have an AWD E30 if you wanted, just need to import it!

Love it how when Merc etc do it everyone hangs shit on them, then when BMW inevitably years later follow its all good.

BMW and M Cars going to SMG/DSG non traditional manuals
    Going to 7 speed autos
    Going to FI

Don't know about the non traditional manuals, but all the other changes (7 speed autos, FI, FWD) are all in the name of fuel economy. Targets keep getting tougher and tougher, and these are just the current solutions. Who knows what the future will bring?

Given the size of BMW, if they don't grow, they could become a division of someone else. Who knows how long the Quandt family will keep their shareholding.
As a division, they may lose direction completely. Diversification is a pretty good idea.
Perhaps they should go a step further. They need another brand that can produce commercial vehicles and the like.

Not much demand for an M Transit.

Hi, I am a FWD BMW. That means I am shit. Because FWD cars are shit. And BMW is all about RWD which is why BMW is the bestest car brand in the world. They are not a business, they are here to make the enthusistats happy with their RWD dynamics.

BMW are a clever company. They know how to turn a profit.
BMW wouldn't survive only on M cars.
I don't see it as a sell out.

Maybe if BMW and Merc had continued to focused on quality, reliability and customer service instead of dropping it in the 1990s and losing continuous amount of market share and awards to Lexus, they wouldn't need to keep trying to attract new customers with horrible niche models.

Thats rediculous Vinnie. BMW bought Mini as an existing entity and simply bank rolled it. The mini was already FWD. And yes, FWD is shit.

umm not quite. considering that literally 80% of 1 series owners dont know that their car is RWD, the space, weight, fuel, performance advantages would far outweigh a couple of old bmw enthusiasts thoughts that bmws heritage is going down the drain by them going down the FWD track.

how exactly do you guys expect them to make a car the size of a mini and have it RWD?

and no, FWD isnt shit. it has many advantages over RWD, hence why BMW is going down that track.

Show me where you got that figure from. Every single 1 series owner I know (and there is at least 6) bought the car for the very reason that it had a good powered motor, lightish and WAS RWD

I don't. My arguemnt is that the Mini was already an entity that BMW now sell. They didnt invent the Mini.
