Thread: cplagz's Turbo M20 powered E30

    cplagz's Turbo M20 powered E30

Thought I'd restart my thread as the information is all over the shop. The story begins when I decided to sell my old car, a 1995 BMW 740iL. Whilst I loved that car (and still miss it) it simply was not the car a 20-something year old wanted to drive, especially in motor sport events. So with that on it's way to a new owner, the hunt began for an E30 .... I wasn't too fussy, I wanted something cheap at that stage. I had driven Dave (afro guys) 325e with a chip and thought, yeah that goes alright, I'll get one of them! After a quick search of eBay I found one. Luckily for me Alan (morerevsm3) was going to be in the area and went and kindly checked the car out for me. It ran, seemed to be in ok condition for the price, so the deal was done and she was on the way. Here is the info from the VIN check - Thanks Gringo!

A few weeks later she arrived from TNT, being that I didn't have a manual license at that stage, Dave came with me and drove it home for me. Needless to say - the tyres were missing a fair amount of tread then what they came over with ... thanks

Upon closer inspection - the cheap strut brace it came with had split - no issue, ditched that and got a Whiteline one instead later down the track.

When I took the car over the pits initially they failed it - because it had been "repaired", the car had previously had a minor front end collision and they had smoothed over the chassis rail with bog (too much) and painted over it so the guy at the pits decided to smash it all apart with a screwdriver (see picture 1), also the drivers seat was "unsafe" and something else I can't remember. All easily fixed - I had the rail assessed by a panel shop and a certificate provided that it was A.OK, the seat I left as was and the next inspector I had just said - get a seat cover for it.

The first thing up on the list of modifications was the handling of the car. So I set out and started researching options. I ended up buying Ireland Engineering Stage 3 Race springs and rear shock mounts with reinforcement plates, Koni Yellow Adjustable shocks (Thanks to Glenn and www.CarShine.com.au), Noltec N92964 subframe bushings, Noltec N62188 rear control arm bushings and Noltec front eccentric control arm bushes. I had the bushes installed by BMTechniks - along with a list of other work to be done, and Renton (E28drifta) and myself attempted to install the suspension. 6 hours or so later, we finally got it in and together and with a sizeable chunk of my heel missing thanks to the dust shield on the front struts, it was off to "test" it out.

It was awesome. By far the most satisfying mod I have done to the car (possibly only because I've not driven it boosted yet) .... but wow, it was a totally different animal!

So naturally the next progression was to have some fun! This is done on private property, I do not condone this on the street
    http://www.dirte30.com/dirte30/whee.3gp

So after a spit and polish this is how she comes up - not bad for a car built in 1986!

The car stayed like this for probably 8 months whilst I was at uni and enjoying it as it was. Did a few days out at AHG and thoroughly enjoyed the car, it had a bit of body roll so I needed to fix that. Out came the wallet again and I purchased some Whiteline sway bars, 24mm front and 16mm adjustable rear bar. I haven't played around with these much, but they definitely stop the body roll a fair bit and make it a lot more predictable.

Along the way I also had the windows tinted (as you do!) by Trent @ TKO Tinting in Victoria Park, installed some 6000k HIDs and found out in the proccess of fiddling that the car has a Z3 Short shifter in it. Once again Renton (E28Drifta) helped me make up some rails and install the R32 GTR seats I had purchased from a mates wreck. They were great seats to sit in, but my shoulders were a bit wide for them.

Soon enough after beating the hell out of the car this happened....

Yes I managed to split the pressure plate in half, Andrew @ BMTechniks was astounded... as was I, but hey, you're only young and stupid once. So a new clutch kit went in and I was on my merry way again... or was I .... one day in peak hour traffic in the city, I gave it some off the line to get in front of traffic before oncoming parked cars would have blocked me... and this little present happened *BANG* *CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK* .... shit

Luckily it happened right outside a friends audio store (Thanks Yandyy @ Audio Art & Technology) so I left my car there overnight and came to tow it home the next morning behind the Range Rover.

After being faced with this issue, I made a decision, a rather expensive, but hopefully a smart decision. I had done some research and purchased a KAAZ 1.5way center from RMS Motor and had my diff completely rebuilt. At this stage I was fairly convinced I was going to be going turbo, but little did I know it would end up where it has.... So after getting my diff back from the Gearbox and Differential Shop in Belmont, I spent the afternoon installing it, filling it with oil (diff oil is the WORST smelling stuff ever!) and then going and breaking it in.... which involved doing low speed and medium speed figure eights for about and hour in a carpark. Needless to say, I got MANY weird looks whilst doing this, but it was worth it, I had read some horror stories about loose diffs if they weren't broken in properly.

I also fitted some DBA Slotted rotors and Ferodo pads somewhere along the way!

Towards the end of my degree, I had decided to turbo charge the car. I had initially decided to try and go the DIY route and use as many favours as I could from anyone I could. My cousin (whom I owe massively for the amount of effort and help he has given me!) had volunteered to do the welding and wiring (sparky by trade), so the plan was a homemade manifold adapter and Megasquirt with some bigger injectors and wasted spark. I bought some ROTA Slipstream 16x8's through a group buy on E30Tech from 18Racing.com, but didn't want to put them on a car with shitty paint. Through much discussion with my old man, I managed to convince him (god knows how) that it was a good idea to pay for the respray of my car as a birthday/graduation present. So I began the arduous task of stripping it down to ship off to paint by Benson at BBK Customs. I'd also managed to source a genuine Zender front lip from Rubin @ BMAuto (http://bmauto.iinet.net.au).

Off she went, and two and a bit weeks later she came back looking like this!

I was over the moon about how it came out, I let Benson choose the colour as I knew roughly I wanted silver, but couldn't decide on dark/light or a combination of both. So I walked off and told him to decide.

Somewhere along here, Glenn managed to convince me to bust out the Hammertone paint for the interior. I was a little skeptical at first, but now I love it. HAMMERTIME!

I had decided at this point, that if I'm going to all the expense of new paint, I might as well build the motor also. After buying a Garrett turbo with a box of bits initially, I on sold that to marcuste and bought the Holset H1C turbo (it's what the swedes use, it must be alright!) I will be using. I found some 440cc/42lbs Ford MOTORSPORT Green top injectors and MSD dual pole coilpacks on eBay and picked them up too. The Megasquirt was being assembled by my cousin and we managed to decipher the wiring diagrams and setup an adapter for the stock loom. This is how it turned out.

Whilst the car was off at paint, I had the bottom end torn down by CGC in Osborne Park. They found the bores were out of round, so that meant my forged 8.0:1 JE Pistons I had already ordered in stock sizing would slap around. So after some more research by them, they found some DART sleeves that would fit and the block got those fitted, along with new welch plugs. I also had them shotpeen, polish and resize the con rods. Once that was back, my uncle happened to be over from Sydney, and agreed to help me assemble the motor. So I'll let the pictures do the talking....

The crank was checked for clearances and polished, I installed new ACL Main and rod bearings, new rod bolts, Raceware headstuds, new oil pump, new water pump, new timing belt and tensioner, new gaskets and seals everywhere and a low temp thermostat. The head was a reconditioned 885 head I purchased from BMTechniks months earlier. I removed the camshaft in it and installed the Pure Performance Factory (www.pure-pf.com) Z45 Turbo grind camshaft instead. So once that was all done, it was down to dropping it back into the car and reassembling all the trim/glass .etc in the car..... time for more pictures!

So once it was all back in, after some fiddling and stuffing around with the Megasquirt we managed to finally get it running. I have a video of it, but it's 27mb so I might stick it up later.

One day my cousin and I were out tuning the car and I was reversing into the garage I noticed the water temp gauge getting rather high, so quickly shut it off and popped the hood. All of a sudden *PSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHT* boiled the coolant. Oh dear, turned lights off and went inside to deal with it tomorrow.... Got out there the next day, checked the oil.... milky, damnit! Took the head off and sent it to CGC to get checked out, they pressure tested it and found a hairline crack.

After some more investigation on CGCs behalf, they had found the head was previously repaired and welded up, you can see where they rubbed back the surface and you could feel the compound difference. Oh dear... what to do now? I had heard rumors of some Spanish company bought BMW head castings and were re manufacturing them. I finally found the name - AMC. After contacting them directly I established who their Australian distributor was, spoke them and and worked out there were two places I could buy them from, luckily for me one was in Perth (HeadTorque) As luck had it, my mum had been to a family funeral a few weeks prior and was talking to her cousins husband... who happened to be the owner of HeadTorque So the order was placed for the AMC head and at the same time I decided to get everything in it new, so I could have some degree of assurance that it would be safe. I also had enough of the MegaSquirt and tuning it myself, so I sold that to Chris (e30guydownunder) and bought an Autronic SM2 and 500-R CDI module on a whim, but before we go into that, here are the pictures of the bits and pieces for the head, thanks again to Patrick @ BMAParts.com and CarrIndustries for the BeeHive valve springs.

With the new head back on, I had purchased a 325i inlet manifold and throttle body from Ade (thanks buddy!) and painted that with crinkle black and fitted it with the Ford injectors.

As you can see from these pictures, I'd mounted the manifold and the turbo... so before I go on, here are the money shots...

I was working 10 hour days and didn't have the time or patience to work on it myself anymore. After countless coffees and chats with my good mate, Joe, we mapped out a plan for the car and decided it was best to leave the rest to an expert. This is where Saf from ISRacing comes into play. To me, he is truly and inspirational person, to understand why you need to know what he's been through - http://www.fastlane.com.au/Features/Ivan_courage.htm - this link gives a brief overview of what he has been through. His fabrication work I've seen is faultless, that's why I chose him for the job. I want to deal with someone who can produce what they say they can, and not talk 100% and produce 80%. So I grabbed a box, chucked everything I had left over into it, put it in the boot of the car and sent it off for him to work his magic. That's where it currently sits and I will update with more details as the come to hand. His mission is to build me an intercooler (from scratch), all the associated pipework, modify the Jon Volk manifold to fit the Synapse wastegate, wire in the ViPEC V88 ecu and basically get it to the stage where it needs a map loaded to turnkey and start tuning. On his recommendation, the Autronic was replaced with the ViPEC, and it was definitely the right thing to do.

These were shot the night before I sent the car off to ISR....

and the next day off she went.....

I have not seen the car since that day, as I've since moved to Brisbane and Saf has had some issues to deal with so the project is moving a bit slower then expected. I don't have a problem with that anyway, as I won't see the car until I'm home in December. So as long as it's going by then, I'll be happy.

Whilst I've been in Brisbane - I've made a few more purchases for the car. The GTR seats were sold prior to me leaving WA, so I bought Dave's (DCR) Sparco Pro 2000 and harness, so now I need one more for passenger.

I have also picked up an AiMSports MXL Strada digital dash - thanks to Mitch (NoScoE30) from E30Tech

    Some Ellipsoids off eBay

    and a B&M Line Locker

..... The story continues ..... November 2009 update

The car has been towed to AllStar Garage to finish it off and tune it. They will be doing the wire-in of the ViPEC, dump pipe, exhaust and the little bits and pieces required to get it going. A few more parcels have recently arrived in the mail, namely LS2 ignition coils (120 milliamps!), 1000cc Bosch EV14 injectors with adaptor hats and a NUKE Performance fuel rail. Some miscellaneous sensors are coming also - EGT, temperature and pressure.

I have been investigating an oil cooler system and have pretty much decided on the setup I will be using. Earls spin-on block off plate, Earls remote filter mount, MOCAL inline thermostat and a B&M supercool core. The lines will all be -8AN in size.

Next on the list to tackle is fuel lines under the car and a surge tank setup, this will probably have to wait until I return to Perth in 10 days and can actually look at the car physically to determine what is best to do. But I will probably run 1/2" (-8AN) feed and 3/8" (-6AN) return aluminium hard line under the car and Earls Pro-Lite line in the engine bay. The fuel pressure regulator has dual -10AN feeds and a -6AN return, and the rail is -8AN.

    December 2009 Update
Have decided to run -6AN rubber lines in the engine bay and retain the stock under car lines.

Here are some goodies that have arrived recently
    NPC Billet 4340 Flywheel

Splined shaft for E36 rack conversion giving extra clearance (not my pic, will update with a dump pipe picture when it's done)

    Two older pics ....
    Nuke Cam Wheel

    AiMSport MXL Strada Dash

Some pictures of the intercooler and pipework ... it's pretty hard to see (which is how I wanted it) but the core runs from the bottom of the front valence up to the radiator support. She's rather large.

I'll make this post the ideas/want post for the future plans for the car......

Two of the biggest factors things on the list to do, are probably two of the most important (to me anyway) fall into one category... Safety.
I want a rollcage and I want bigger brakes. The rollcage I want to be tucked as close to the body as possible so I can have the pillars upholstered like the Piper M3 (see pic)

Brakes... well, what to do here? E30's don't have a huge range of options unless you do the M3 5-lug swap. So I'm looking at the MassiveBrakes kits or considering running 17's and getting a similar setup to 1q2w3e4r using Brembo calipers. I will probably leave this until I am back in Perth and drop the car off to a friend who runs a brake/clutch shop

I don't remember hearing too much complaining over all the giggling that was going on! I believe there are a few other videos floating around somewhere from the first few months that you had the car too.
I can't believe how patient you've been with this build though, can not wait to see it up and running properly.

thanks for posting tht link to your fabricators story. Ivan sounds like a top bloke and with the sort of spirit he has to get back out there and on motorbikes after it all, he sure sounds like just the bloke for a long drawn out project

Yes..... patience or stupid? That is the question.

Because to use the Autronic I was going to need a new loom, sensors and reflash of the ECU. Which was going to bring the cost of the Autronic close to what the ViPEC was new, and the V88 had a new loom, sensors....and warranty.

Don't get me wrong, the Autronic is a fantastic and extremely capable ECU, but if you look closer they have eleventy billion firmware versions of which you need to have the right one to run the car properly, and it costs you each time to want to upgrade.

The ViPEC has free firmware upgrades via USB, great support via the forums and constant development. The other plus about the ViPEC is it can feed straight into my dash, so whatever sensors I feed into my ECU I can feed straight to the dash.

Journey..... you got that right! I'm really wanting to bring the car back over here with me (to Brisbane) next year and then spend a month working my way down the coast to Adelaide and truck the car back home. Stopping along the way obviously to take everyone for a spin who's helped me out .... no guarantees though haha!
