Go and test drive an i30 turbo diesel if you want to see how far they have come.
I would much prefer to drive one of them as a daily than any 1979 model BMW
I didn't know the Tiburon was good value for money.
So I went and had a look.
It's $34,990 plus on road costs and for that you get a 2.7 litre V6 that puts out 123KW/245NM or about the same as a similar sized engine from a 30 year old BMW.
Even the ordinary four cylinder engines (with a smaller capacity) in mid sized cars (including ones made by Holden, Ford or by the French or American) have more power than that and at 1350kgs it's not really much lighter either.
So where is the value for money? It is a bit cheaper than other "sports" cars in that range but they all offer a lot more.
I haven't driven a Tiburon or Genesis but have given some of their more popular models a go and they were terrible.
BTW, Lexus' cars are priced a little bit higher than a Hyundai, so they can afford to put a little bit more money into their design (though in some cases the car was already designed, they just put a disguise on it and up the price tag). I've been in a current model GS (and a old one)and I would not have said they got it right (understeers early, tiny boot, lifeless steering and rather ugly).

The negative comments about Korean cars or more specically Hyundai echo our father's sentiments when Japanese cars came on the market some 40 years ago.
Like Toyota, Honda, Suzuki etc had to etch their brands into the hearts and minds of Australians, Hyundai have had to work tirelessly to get away from the Korean stereotype and I for one think they have done just that with this car.
Also, when you consider that the only RWD coupes coming out of Japanese brands include the RX8, 370Z, S2000 and quite possibly something from Lexus the new Hyundai will go bonkers here.
Naturally Korean cars will grow in popularity, A. becuase they have now been around for 25 years and B. The Chinese cars which are knocking heavily on our front door will become the new 'hated cars'.
End rant.

Sideways the Only way to Be - FWD now! Strictly hand brakies and lift-off oversteer!
First off your retarded, cars don't move on KW/HP rating they move on torque and with 255nm worth of torque, which is nearly as much as my GTI, it will be able to shift the i30 pretty swiftly.
Also the real world is NOT a skidpan where all of those handling test happen.
The only thread with extra fap.
Open the place back up! Tell the whores if their legs ain't in the air, they'd better be off their asses!
I reckon you may have proven me right in your simple attempt to make a point.
You've said that you tried their popular models and thought they were crap.
I've driven a heap of them as hire cars and, have only disliked one, the elantra. The Sonata Elite is one of the best cars i've driven.
The Getz i think is one of the most fun little cars to drive and for what you pay for. Good value. Simple, but neat.
But how do you define terrible? what made them leave this horrible impression on your life?
like i said above, i love the Getz. it's got no power, but, the handing is not too bad considering its a small/tiny car. The pedal position on them is awesome for some heel toe action and they love to shift with out a clutch. i ******* love driving them, they're fun, so that means its a good car in my book.
I've given Getz rentals a dead set hiding for long periods of time and i assume other people have too and rental companies keep buying them, so i assume they're pretty reliable.
Where do i begin with shit cars? i reckon the Nisan Tiida is a massive steaming pile, but i'm not going to shit can Nissan for one mistake.
I also think the current model Imprezza is the biggest steaming pile of shit on the road at the moment. also, i wont shit can Subaru for that, even though it is positivly the worst car i have ever driven and i used to have an EL Falcon Wagon!
Hyundai have a place in the market, but, for some stupid reason, people try to compare them to cars which are out of their class. Not just styling, but also performance.
Comparing the tibi engine to a '30 year old BMW engine' is just retarded. ****, i've had 30 year old BMW's, they're not that great, i'd take a new car over one anyday, regardless of what it is.
it's like comparing a windsor to a flat head.
Every one is very quick to shit can them due to a few shit cars, but, theres a shit load of excels out there and no doubt they've been a great car for a lot of people.
Car makers build shit cars all the time and people forget pretty quickly:
Camira - Thanks for reminding me
Tiida
Imprezza
VN
EA-EL
AU
Cresida

P76s are sick dude lol

Golf, Civic, Corolla, 3, Focus, Impreza. From memory the Golf was 1st followed by Mazda 3 and Focus. I think the i30 was actually 6th and either the Impreza and civic with 5th or last spot. They had a really good quote for the i30 which went something like "one giant leap for Hyundai, one step back for the class".who were the 7 other competitors?
Interesting. My torque peaks at about 4000rpm. My power peaks at 5700rpm. I find my car to be fastest when I shift right on the redline at 6250rpm whereby the revs drop to around 4500 - above where the torque has peaked and where the torque graphs clearly show it's died off.First off your retarded, cars don't move on KW/HP rating they move on torque and with 255nm worth of torque, which is nearly as much as my GTI, it will be able to shift the i30 pretty swiftly.
So by your theory, my car would be faster if I shifted earlier so it could ride the peak torque?
Just so you know the i30 Diesel does a 0-100km\h time of 13.7 seconds. I think it must be the slowest non commercial car on the market making it the LEAST swift car.
I agree that Tiidas, Imprezas and Camiras are pretty nasty, but I'd say they were on par with a Hyundai.
I've driven a Getz too and I found the Handling to be pretty woeful. It too, is generally ranked as the worst handling car in that segment. Try a Fiesta - its in a completely different galaxy for handling against a Getz.
The Getz was also released with a 2.5 star safety rating (after the facelift it was 3 stars - 4 if you got the safety pack that didn't come in untill about 5 years after it was released!) at a time when competitors had a 4 star rating without having to pay extra.
It was at least the first Hyundai I've been in that at least to sit in and look at, felt as good quality as a normal car.
Just so you know Matt, Rental companys buy Tiidas, Imprezas and Falcons too and they replace them after two years. I can't really imagine the customers would have the cars long enough to conclude that a specific rental mode was reliable. Taxi companys also buy USED falcons and then build up a million km on them.
I'm sorry you didn't understand what I meant by comparing the power output of a new car to one that was 30 years old. I didn't compare the cars, only the power ouput. For me - if I bought a new car, I'd expect it's engine to produce more power than cars from 30 years ago with similar engine sizes. I also can't help remarking that at a 10.3L\100km ADR rating for the Tiburon, that 123KW engine uses more fuel than most cars in the 180-220Kw engine segment. Here I'm drawing a conclusion by looking at cold hard facts; it's 2.7 V6 has less power than smaller, far more fuel efficient four cylinders yet uses as much fuel as 3-4.0 litre 6 cylinders (many made by what people here call the worst companys) with around 200KW - my conclusion? Crap engine.

the majority of small cars in the rental market a while ago were getz'.
fair enough i dont travel as much as i used to, but i may be wrong but from that i can draw the conclusion that they just have been reliable enough. i get what you're saying about one particular renter not having them long enough to draw a conclusion on reliablity, but, the rental copmpanies do.
I did used to have them for 2+ weeks at a time, so i think i did get to have a decent look at them.
Hyundai Sonata Elite
Hyundai Getz
Ford Edge that i have now in the US.
Crappest cars i've driven:
Nissan X-trail, massive hunk of shit.
Imprezza
Tiida
I just dont think you're looking at them the same way i am.
are you a mechanic? do you do any work on your own cars or do you dole them out? do you know anything about cars other than comparing them on paper? do you think a strut brace is the best placebo mod you can put on a car?
I'm not having a shot at you, all beit a spirited discussion.
I might take your comments a little more seriously if you answered yes to any of them above.
My old man has a saying which i think is pretty relevent at the moment.
"if you wont to know somehting about a car, ask someone who doesn't have one, he'll tell you all about it"
Gooooone
Why don't you address the facts instead of branching off into a pointless personal probe? It's useless arguing individual opinions without bringing in any evidence. I've looked at the specs of some of the cars that people here claim demonstrate Hyundai's brilliance and the specs do not look good.
The "good value" Tiburons V6 according to Hyundai has 123KW/245NM and actually weighs over 1400kgs according to its website and on the ADR cycle uses 10.3/10.4L\100km\h.
I find that those specs to be absolute garbage. Why?
A ordinary Mazda 6 which isn't supposed to be a sports car is barely any heavier, costs $5000 less, has more power (126KW) and uses almost %20 less fuel. The Subaru Liberty has almost identical specs as does most of the cars in the medium 4 cylinder segment.
A Ford XR5 costs just $2K more than a Tiburon, yet offers 166KW/320NM but uses only 9.1L\100km on the ADR cycle - thats %30 more power and %30 more torque with %15 better fuel economy and remember, this is comparing "one of the worst companys" - Ford, against "pretty good" Hyundai.
The "pretty swift" Hyundai i30D does a 0-100kmh time of 13.7 secs. What else do you expect from a car that weighs between 1390-1450kgs with only 85KW. The Getz was said to have "no power" but in reality, it's power to weight ratio is more than %20 better than the i30 Diesel.
As for Torque getting it moving quickly, it'll make it easier to drive in traffic and help towing but when you really put your foot down, it'll only go a fraction quicker, make lots of noise and blow lots of smoke.
As for the Getz, I disagree about the handling and I can also remember one of Wheels magazines "active safety tests" from around 2006/07 in which the Getz was ranked in bottom or near bottom in a series of handling related tests. One point I remember was that the two ton Toyota Landcruiser could stop from 100km\h about 1/2 a car length shorter than the 1050kg Getz.
It was also only able to achieve a 2.5 star crash rating - recently improved to 3 stars or 4 with the optional safety pack which brings the price up to cars that already had 4 stars (and they can go to 5 with their optional pack). It was at least better than the accent which I think originally got 1.5 stars.
