Went well so far and I think the abilities of Australia came across really well between VCAMM, Deakin University, CSIRO and some of the suppliers. Will be now a matter of seeing how it all comes together over the coming months but the country made a great impression (19 degrees, sunny and clear 3 days in a row in Melbourne in Winter WTF???).
Even I am shocked: why we're not leading the world in manufacturing when we're so capable is beyond me.
i was thinking more pacman swallowed an oversized jelly bean.
this is an interesting project.
please keep us up to date.
i have always wondered about the 'cost to the environment' in making and powering 'green' cars.
it is good to see someone else is looking at this also.
i mean whats the point in electric vehicles in a country like ours where we burn fossil fuels to make electricity??
out electricity is grid is already lagging behind demand.
what about all the plastics etc in a prius? what about all the awful chemicals etc that make up all those batteries - and WTF are they going to do with all the left over batteries??
top gear showed a prius going flat out is more fuel hungry than a v8 m3 just keeping pace with it.
I heard that at 140kph a Prius runs at about 3.4km/litre. Factor of a truck weight car being run on an undersized engine. Is why the bloody things are no good outside the cities.
Nice thing about fuel cells is you increase the size (or density) and they get faster, so once the technology is at a point where it is more cost effective Performance cars running on fuel cells are a reality. This can do the equivalent of 100km per litre, which is at least efficient and with a lower requirement production can be generated from off peak Coal or Nuclear Power Stations which are otherwise wasting power.
The other nice thing as you mention is the focus on the manufacturing process, where Steve is an expert and the focus on recyclable including extraction and reuse of the polymers in the Carbon fibre and not just the fibre. the really good thing for me was that Australia is already underway with this research and hopefully can take a lead in this.
With this project being one of the largest sustainability driven carbon fibre manufacturing ventures yet undertaken it would be very exciting if Australian ventures can take a big part in it and establish themselves as leaders in the technology.
That's because a Prius and a V8 M3 or any other type of high performance car are designed with completely different performance envelopes in mind. They are not a very good comparison.
You need a vehicle with a similar performance envelope to a Prius to compare it with, perhaps a whole range of vehicles.
Craig.
