I can't believe how quickly you are building this! That is some really impressive fabrication, keep up the good work!

Bit of an uneventful day today, nothing too much to take photo's of due to rain delays.
I got the tailshaft out and will be dropping it over to a tailshaft moding place tomorrow to have it shortened and the toyota Yoke fitted to it.
I also started to get some wiring ready, namely Fuel pump, Main, and Thermo fan relays, and fuse. I've ordered a Jaycar electronic temperature switch to control the thermo fan and drive the relay.
I sorted the bottom radiator hose out, by cutting some off the factory aristo hose and it worked out very nicely. The top hose will be tricky due to room s constraints with the Intercooler piping in place.
I will have to make a solid pipe from the top radiator outlet to bend up and over the cooler piping and also need to incorporate a radiator cap/fill point into this pipe too because the BMW radiator doesn't have a filling cap. The small pipe from the top of the tank will be either blocked or converted to a bleed and an overflow bottle will be put in place of the factory headlight washer jet bottle, that has been removed.
I had a look at the power steer feed also, and might be able to adapt the Aristo hose to suit. I'll be grabbing a flare nut and seeing if I can sort this out tomorrow.
I also spent some time contemplating the intercooler piping and think I may be able to get away with a pair of 3inch-2.5inch reducing 90 deg elbows from the intercooler, back to 2.5inch intercooler piping to mate up with the two factory black rubber lines. Not the prettiest solution, but should be adequate and as the car isn't meant to be a beast, it will more then suffice.
I still gotta say that this is coming along quikly!! U are sooooo gettin a call when i finally get the $$$ to turbo my car!
Second hand/Skid tyres availble
Want to sharpen your e30's steering? Pm me for a CNC'd steering coupler!

Ben what on earth do you do to get so much time on your hands?
But yeah she sounds like she's coming along quite quickly
Why not start up a company for BMW to Jap conversions![]()

I was thinking the other day how much you'd have to charge to make money out of doing this and can easily see the $1000's mechanics charge in it.
I"ve also got to get it done so can start on my house... Never endsThen there's the E30 when I get it back.. hehehe
Pictures will follow later when my digicam battery is charged, but have completed mounting the FMIC, completed the intercooler piping and the top radiator hose.
Intercooler piping became lots easier after deciding to go with a pair of 3inch-2.5inch reducing 90 deg silicon elbows and keeping it only 2.5inch diameter. I managed to align the piping and retain the factory throttlebody and turbo outlet rubber piping, which in turn worked out beautifully. Everything fit's neat and tidy, aside from the intercooler hanging out under the front bar
The radiator top pipe was also a bit tricky but I managed to tuck it under the throttlebody and out in front of the engine just clearing the TB piping. I have yet to have fitted a radiator cap on that little stub at the front of the engine...

Removed the engine and replaced the timing belt and serpetine belt last night.
I also cut the brackets that Were reducing clearance and a few other little bits and peices.
Today I decided I would cut and shut the sump rather then the more abusive hit with a hammer, so I've created a small step in the sump where it was close to the crossmember which should give me around 15mm clearance to the crossmember to allow for sag and rolling etc.
I had the radiator ferral to take the cap fitted and will be bending a power steer pipie out of the way before putting the engine back in for good tomorrow
I can then set about having a power steer feed modified and connecting everything back up for the final time
I've managed to find a tupperware style container jsut the right size for the toyota ECU so will be mounting it in a fusion between this container and the factory fitted lid in the std location. With some shuffling I think it should all fit
Then the only thing unaddressed is the tailshaft to which I'll be taking the toyota output spider to someone to have it matched and a new UNI fitted to the Gearbox and obviously the wiring. *touch wood* will be running ready for the monday after this one![]()
Have been working on car last few days getting all the little stuff sorted.
Engine is in for good nowThis required some oil filter massaging, which I'm not 100% happy with, so will look at other avenues soon to try and sort this out.
I'm having some problems finding a Tailshaft place in Brisbane with the competance to adapt the toyota to the BMW tailshaft. It seems people are scared of the BMW tailshafts as they are supposedly very finicky with the balancing. One place yesterday said it would take 8 full hours to balance the shaft!!! Strangely enough I then collected my bits and walked away.
Will be talking to Hardy Spicer today and hopefully come to a solution.
I've started the wiring as can be seen in the photo's. It takes about 5 wires to get the engine running then another 10-12 to get the auto to work correctly. This is due to all the little extras. Nuetral starts, pattern selector(has 2 modes), Overdrive switch (electronic lock up clutch), stop light input, Kickdown switch, etc etc etc...
I will be also trying to interface some sensors, such as water temp, oil pressure and tacho with the factory BMW dash. There was soem surgery, brackets and rearrangement needed to the BMW fuse box to fit the Toyota ECU in the factory place. I will need to work out how to seal the rear of the box which I needed to relieve to fit the ECU. Aside from that once you have your head around the looms isn't doesn't appear too bad(see photos)
I'm mainly interfacing with the round plug (X20) on the pass side near the fuse box, however there is a smaller plug inside the ECU box on the drivers side that has approx 8 wires in it, which I'm not sure what they do. Perhaps someone can shed some light on this and save me a lot of wire tracing?
Ben try this place:
Universal Drive Shaft Services Qld 446

The made up a custom tailshaft for me for about $380??
The guy's there made up mine and apparently Grant's (SER30) too, the guy you should ask for is Steve, as he'll calculate out what size you need and all you need to give him is the yoke off the gearbox and the tail end of the BMW tailshaft.
They'll tell you where to measure to and from and yeah i've found them very good to deal with, since the tailshaft made up for the E30 (someone gave the wrong size...100mm too long) and they only charge $50 to get it re-sized and balanced.
BUt if you want, try out Hardy Spicer. The only reason i went there, as that is the place the workshop whom is tuning my car recommended.
Thanks Wayno...
I've already spoken to Trevor there a couple fo ties and he has my shaft nowI checked alignment of my engine and tailshaft as best I could today and it appears to be only 2-5mm missalignment which the toyota rubber donut should be able to soak up, so I'm just getting him to cut and shut it for me

looks like a major headache of a conversion, but I can see it will be awesome afterwards... hope it all comes together as planned
Ben,
You seem to leave a good impression on people...lol
Yeah went to pick up my tailshaft today and spoke to Trevor, his response was..."So you recommend him to me"...im like...hmmm...maybe??
Yeah hope you get it up and going soon, although i think you might hold a record here for quickest engine transplant in Project Section of ECCA...![]()
I'd actually been to visit Trevor last week and was suprised to see you mention himHopefully he'll have my tailshaft for me tomorrow
I have run the engine today, albe-it with a couple of little issues that I think I have sorted. I have no idea if the transmission will shift properly etc, but I have a bit of wiring related to it to take care of. I also have to wire up my thermo fan controller which I will try adn look at tonight.
I'm trying to interface a few more sensors, such as oil pressure, oil level and possibly even the coolant level, if I can get the sensor in a new overflow bottle.
I also need to address the tacho interface and coolant sensor(though the engine hasn't really been up to operating temp as of yet)
I'm reluctant to finish the wiring until I've taken the car for a good drive to make sure I haven't missed anything. after which time I'll neatly wrap the looms to make them acceptable.
