well, pics say more than words. looks like i've sheared the shaft which locate the spider gears
started as a rattle which i suspected was my gearbox, then started clunking pretty heavily. Called a gearbox place which said to check the diff before i throw in another box - glad i did
will be calling around some places today, the crown and pinion seem to be OK still so if i can get away with a new/used LSD centre (OEM or aftermarket), that'd be nice. otherwise same old open diff will be going in, depends on $$$ really.
oh yeh, and notice how my diff oil looks glittery - i'm guessing that's not some additive to make my diff feel sexier!
so thats what i can expect to do to mine once tuned lol might have to start savin to do a group buy on some 328 runnin gear

yep and its 3.45 so my gear ratios are way out at the moment first is like second gear
well after a few dramas chris and i got the car running again this arvo with rebuilt diff. heres a pic of the spider gear assembly pulled apart. The shaft at the bottom is supposed to be 1 piece
Did yous rebuild the diff yourself or slip in another???

there where no 3.9 diffs at the wrecker so we got a 4.1 stripped it checked all bearings and seals and re assembled using the old 3.9 geas... the 4.1 gears are going in mine. the diffs are so much easy to re-assemble than a hilux
Did you dial guage the back lash or by hand?
Obviously you still used the 3.9 housing, so you did not have to remove the pinon and reset pinon depth.

there's no adjustments in these diffs, there's a couple of cones which locate the whole hemisphere on the roller bearings, tighten them up and its centered!
seriously - i never opened a diff before, and the thing runs beautifully again
yeh as chris said. the only adjustment is with shims on the 2 outside plates which centre the housing but we checked the feel and reused all the same bearings. i'm doing mine now and i'll get some good pics. honestly the easiest diff i have ever done
Okies
