My wheel was from an early e34, so they do fit (you just need a fine spline wheel, so e28, e30, early e34 wheels all fit).

If the leather is still ok - just the top coat has worn off / gone grey -...

i saw a tech 2 wheel at a pick-a-part from an early e34 i think 89 which "should" fit the e30 im still umming and ahhing over whether to get it, it looks sun damaged too though :(

Thanks mate. I think what i'll do is first take off the top shifter cover to try and see what could be causing it. I'll first try to clean it up and lube it as per your finding, and see if that helps...
