Team Peugeot RCZ has confirmed it will enter two RCZs in the upcoming Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 hour race in February, 2013.

Peugeot is no stranger to the mountain having raced there in the 1992 along with other large factory teams.

The weekend of February 8-10, 2013 will be the home of Australia’s international endurance race and Peugeot Sport will be the only factory-based team taking part on the mountain.

The lead car will be driven by three French drivers Stephane Caillet, Bruce Jouanny, Julien Rueflin.

The second car will be piloted by a team of local drivers with confirmation on names to be revealed shortly.

``Peugeot has a long history of involvement in motorsport and we are keen to rebuild that DNA in the brand,’’ said Peugeot Automobiles Australia General Manager Bill Gillespie.

``An event like the Bathurst 12-hour is a great toe in the water in Australia as it shows off the racing capability of the RCZ but also reinforces the reliability of the cars as well.’’

    The two cars will be powered by the RCZ’s 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 190kW @ 6500rpm, 290Nm @ 3500-5500rpm.

The suspension has been modified, an additional fuel tank allows 100 litres of fuel to be carried and a modification has been made to the aerodynamics of the vehicle.

This choice of technology allows among other things an overall weight reduction of 120kg and so a more even weight distribution.

This new RCZ has been developed over the past two years for circuit racing and more particularly sprint racing such as the RCZ Racing Cup which started in September this year.

The RCZs will compete in the new Invitational Class (I1) for cars up to 1600cc.

The opening round of the 2013 Australian GT Championship will also be incorporated into the Bathurst 12 Hour.

Australian GT will conduct a one-hour race within the Bathurst 12 Hour race itself, commencing at the beginning of the enduro and ending at the end of the first hour.

Winton Festival of Speed brings back Rolling Starts and Pit stops

Touring Car devotees will be able to journey back in time to witness tin-top racing ‘as it used to be’ at the second annual Festival of Speed staged on the Winton Long Circuit over the August 13-14 weekend.

Organised jointly by the Victorian Historic Racing Register (VHRR) and the Winton Raceway, one of the highlights of the Festival of Speed will be a Group N historic touring car race complete with a rolling start and a pit stop.

The 20-lap Shannons ‘Rose City Touring Car Trophy’ for cars under and over 3.0 litres will be a mini endurance event lasting almost half an hour that is guaranteed to generate plenty of excitement.

For added interest there will be a top-10 shoot out to establish grid positions for the Trophy event.

The touring car race will augment the Rose City 10,000, a re-enactment of the 1978 open-wheel race for the big Formula 5000 V8 racing cars that was won by former Formula One World Champion James Hunt.

The 2011 re-creation will be run as two separate 10-lap races with an hour’s break in between. This will help with reliability.

The Festival’s Race Committee Chairman, Ian Ross, said the modern re-creation of the Rose City 10,000 would be even more exciting than the original event, which was run on the old ‘short track’. As well as the main event, the Formula 5000s will have a 30- minute qualifying session, plus an eight-lap race.

“With the Long Track’s two additional long straights, we expect the F5000 ‘big bangers’ to reach some awesome speeds, further enhancing the spectacle of noise and power,” he said.

The organisers are hoping to attract a field of at least a dozen of the 5.0-litre open wheelers, which in their heyday were every bit as popular as their touring car brothers.

The second ‘Festival of Speed’ has already attracted considerable interest from historic racers and the final list is expected to eclipse that of 2010.

Online entry for Australia’s first national motoring and motorsport festival – CARnival – is now open at www.camscarnival.com.au.

Held in Echuca-Moama on the Murray River over the October 2-3 weekend this year, CARnival will see up to 2,000 vehicles of all makes, models and ages gather to take part in more than 30 competitive and non-competitive motoring activities.

These will range from huge static club displays to motorkhanas and speed events on both tarmac and unsealed surfaces. And while CARnival is a CAMS initiative to foster grass-roots motorsport, all clubs and enthusiasts are welcome.

Registration for CARnival will cost entrants $35 inc GST, for which they will receive a ‘CARnival Kit’ containing discount vouchers to many local restaurants, cafes and attractions, plus free entry into a number of special CARnival events.

These include a Motorsport Film, Photo and Art Festival featuring historic racing films and an exhibition of the works of well-known motorsport cartoonist John ‘Stonie’ Stoneham, entry to the CARnival Swap Meet and CARnival Village and a fun Observation Touring event for car club members.

A wide range of other non-competitive and competitive CARnival events staged on both tarmac and unsealed surfaces can be entered online, with prices for different daily and weekend activities starting at just $30.

The major activity of CARnival will be the Shannons Show ‘n Shine in Echuca’s picturesque Aquatic Reserve on the banks of the Murray River.

Motorkhana enthusiasts have the opportunity to tackle 20 separate timed events on both tarmac and grass for a fee of $50 per individual discipline, while entry in the five-stage Rallysprint will cost $100. Entry fees for the entire weekend is capped at $195 including registration and GST, with competitors able to drive in more than 50 timed events plus a 250km Navigation Trial and a Fuel Economy Test.
