Hey fellas, i have the same post on bimmerforums but thought id also try here cause you guys are awesome.

My e34 is due for its coolant change and just wondering how much bmw blue coolant i will need. For a 50/50 mix i know i need 6 litres of the stuff, but here it costs $25 for i think is the 1.5L so ill need 100 bucks worth of coolant??? I've heard a reputable bmw mechanic near me says that one bottle of the stuff is enough, is this true? then why does bmw suggest a 50/50 mix?

Anyways in the past ive used a product sold here called Nulon Longlife, here is a link to their website http://www.nulon.com.au/products/Lon...rated_Coolant/, apparently its pretty good stuff which alot of people use. At approx. 35-40 bucks for 5 litres i will go with that if it works out cheaper then bmw blue coolant. Anybody else use nulon?

thanks in advance

Currently considering doing a manual conversion to my 535i, and just wanted a confirmation of the parts i need for a complete swap

I've done a manual conversion before on other cars, and i'm a qualified mechanic, so the task itself isn't an issue

its just if i do go ahead with it, i want everything there, so i dont have to stop halfway through and order a part i forgot, leaving me stranded without a car for a while

So, in no particular order, here's what i think i need off the top of my head

Manual gearbox
shifter linkage setup
shifter surround
tailshaft
flywheel
clutch setup
peal box assembly
master/slave cylinders and fluid lines
gearbox mount

So what mods do you recommend i do before putting it all in the car?
I've read about using an e28 M5 flywheel and clutch setup, what are the benefits of this apart from replacing a dual mass flywheel that is potentially worn out with a cheaper setup

short shifter? or new bushings?
new guibo

ok, so what wiring changes do i need to do?

obviously i need to bridge the starter isolation switch, that only allows you to start in park/neutral

work out how to connect the clutch switch to the cruise control setup

disable the instrument cluster auto gear display

remove auto ecu and wiring, is that loom seperate to everything else?

What about the diff, obviously the high ratio'd auto diff will make the car accelerate faster, but i've read that there is different length diff noses for manual, or am i wrong, will the manual tailshaft bolt up to the auto diff without mods required?

what are some options for changing the diff? LSD, ratios, where do i get one etc?

and if you have any other ideas/opinions on the swap, please voice them

Hey

I'm new to the forums and ive had my e30 for a bit over a year now, has been relatively pain free experience so far just fixing things that most 25yo cars would need fixing (cooling system ect).

Ive got an 85' 323i auto and have been having a bit of trouble with cold starts, basically it turns over but doesnt fire( after a few attempts with a bit of accelerator it starts).

Today though while i was at the shops it was very hard to start and when i eventually got it started it was idling fine but as soon as i put it into gear( load on the motor) it would struggle to idle and then died. The car revved fine whilst out of gear in park. I just let it idle for a minute or 2 and then it was fine again.

Has anyone had a similar problem to this and where/what should i be looking for?

I'm going to replace the dizzy cap and rotor this week as the car has a bit of a miss and the cap is fooked

Anyways cheers for any help

Alex

I guess it's time to consider some intelligence sharing on this subject. My reguarly track day driven m3 needs some assistance in this area. My setup seems pretty track capable but ultimately I need to work the brakes to 110% to get fast lap times. I get understeer on the tight corners especially and I can't get the power on until well thru the corner.
My setup is as follows

koni yellows with eibach springs with the shocks about 3/4 turn from full hard on the rear and 1+1/2 tunn from full hard on front. I have the Tms roll bars set on full soft on the front and full hard on the rear. Andy algnment is as follows
front toe in 0.3mm per side camber -3.8deg and 6deg of castor. Rear 1.2mm of toe in per side and -2 deg camber.

Next aligent prob go to minor toe out and - 4.5deg camber perhaps a tiny bit more toe in on the rear and rear shocks to full hard. I also have solid camber plates and one of those x- braces.

I want an uncompremised setup for track with the exception of massive front toe out as I don't want to scrub the insides out of my tyres all the time. I also thought of going for harder rear springs as these are the STD lowered kit of eibach springs anything super hard.

Let the discussion begin.

Well my e34 535i has suffered from the notorious m30 oil drain back valve problem. After sitting for a while the oil drains out of the oil canister and requires several seconds to build oil pressure when the car is started.

Seeing as the supercharger nose is in the way of the oil filter anyway, I plan to do an oil filter relocation. There was a kit available specifically for the m30, but apparently it is now NLA. So I'm thinking that I might be able to use a generic one like this. I have the ability to fab up a plate to connect it at the engine end I'm just wondering how I would go about choosing a replacement oil filter as the standard canister type would no longer work.

Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas?

if things are unspecified in the e30 regulations does that mean they are free? there was no mention about valves, valvesprings or rockers, or wether the internal parts could be lightened (i havent found section 6 or 7 of the cams manual so it might be in there idk.)

and are there any things that would help me decide wether i want to go into production or race (cost of events or things like that). I havent really done any research but i want to get into racing.

I have an E36 with 5 speed manual ZF gearbox.

I had a stage 2 F1 racing clutch and single mass flywheel fitted at Auto Dynamics in Cheltenham and as soon as it was fitted the gearstick wobbled lightly while reversing and shook violently when engine braking in second gear. The vibration is linked to road speed not engine rpm.

This caused me to change my driving style and clutch in while in second gear as the vibrating stopped when accelerating in second gear. Now 6 months and 5,000kms later the problem has been getting worse. Second gear now shakes on acceleration as well as engine braking. Third gear has now begun to vibrate when engine braking also.

Could this be a bearing gone?
Flywheel not fitted properly?
Car still goes fast and clutch is still perfect.

It's a shame I paid a premium to have this fitted at a bmw specialist because they were located around the corner. They had probably never fitted a single mass flywheel before.

A similar thread above and no one answered the questions. The clutch/flywheel seems to be the problem

Heya everyone, just wondering if anyone has done the M30B35 conversion in an E21 and give me some help??

Mid next week I am picking up my first Euro car  it's a 1980 E21 which was originally a 320 6 cyclinder manual. When I pick it up it will have a M30B35 engine already in the engine bay which was originally from a 1987 E32 735i. The engine will be bolted in and basically all I have left to do in terms of the engine bay is wire it up and work out the fuel system. The engine also needs bolting up to a gearbox as the car currently does not have one. So here come my questions:

1) As far as im aware the 1980 E21 320i 6 cyclinder originally had a carburettor setup whereas the 1987 E32 735i was fuel injected, yes? Now I want to keep the remainder of the work on this car as cheap as possible so I want to keep the car carburetted in the meantime and further down the track when funds permit I will convert it to fuel injection. So what sort of carburretor set up should I look at?

2) The E21 was originally a manual car, not sure whether the E32 was or not, and I wish to keep the E21 as manual. I hate automatics! What gearbox would I be looking at bolting into the car??

3) Finally where is the best place to locate the gearbox and carburettor gear I will need to finish of this car? Im located in Adelaide.

I had a quick search to try to find some answers to these questions but couldnt find anything hence why Im asking.

Im really excited about picking up this E21 next week as Ive always loved the early 3 series and have been after one for quite a while now. The one Ive found has a good body and retrimmed interior and comes with lots of parts and Im getting it at a very reasonable price too. I want to find out what I have to do to finish of the car so that I can hopefully pick up some parts for it over the weekend as I will need to get it running a.s.a.p as it will be daily driver.

Any help is greatly appreciated
