Some interesting observations from the recent idle problem with my M42B18.

Recently the engine began to idle very poorly when it was cold. The symptoms that were shown with a very rough and low idle and a very strong smell of petrol from the exhaust which would lead one to issue that it was running rich. Once the car was brought up to temperature it would run fine with a steady idle normal performance and no other abnormalities.

Based upon the fact that this was happening when the car was cold led me to presume that the issue was related to the cold start system which is primarily based upon as far as I know the engine coolant sensor and the idle control valve.
I pulled out the ICV and gave it a clean the little flap was moving fine so I gave it a light oil and put it back in. There was no change to cold idle characteristics. As a test disconnecting the ICV when the engine was cold make matters worse, so I logically concluded the ICV was not the issue.

I had a spare temperature sensor as they are the same between the M42 and the M20. As a test when the engine was cold I connected the new sensor to the engine harness with the sensor just sitting there in the air. The car idled the best and smoothest I have ever seen or heard, it was like a rock just perfect. So I switched the sensor over in the block from the old to the new and connected it up again and then went to start the car and bastard wouldn’t start. I did get to start but I had to dab the throttle a little bit to get it to start. I found this quite odd as the only change was to actually put the sensor in the block. This is a two prong sensor so I assume it doesn’t birth through the block regardless I have the sensor sitting some metal of the car.

So what am I getting at well I don’t really know. I just found it interesting that the same sensor when in the block or out of the block provided a different result. This was done at night and when the car had been sitting for one week and when it was quite cold so I would only assume that the delta between air temperature and engine temperature were minimal.

Maybe I am crazy and maybe I should look at it again in daylight but gee I was impressed by the smoothness of the idle with my ‘freeair coolant sensor’ group.

Hey guys,

As the title suggests I am from Sydney and am the owner of an 89 Alpine White 2 door e30. It is currently in a million pieces as it prepares for a M52B28 swap. I have 90% of the parts (including the new motor) and am only awaiting collection upon a couple more bits.

Depending on response I may post a very slow project thread but university and a lack of funds holds me back presently.

Incidentally I am on the lookout for an M20 starter motor in good condition, so if anybody knows somebody selling for a fair price then please let me know. (shamelessly whoring for bits for sale on his first post - how tragic =P)

Regards,

Hi fellas,

Just wandering if you got any experiences with E39 shifter issues. My car drives fine. It goes from P through to N no worries, but when I need to select Drive, I have to slightly push the shifter to the left in order for it to click/go down into Drive.
I've been driving it like that for a while, so its not a problem at all, I would just like to sort it out.
Has something, possibly dirt gone into the shifter or is the shifter faulty...???
Any help would be appreciated.

the car drives fine. Smells a bit of burnt oil and has smoke coming from close to fire wall. Would that be the pvc leak thing? gonna take it to work and get it looked at this week (thank god for working for bmw) and hopefully it checks out fine.. Also heard a bit of ticking in the engine bay.. what should I be checking when getting an e46?

Hey guys,

My dad got an E34 525i (M50 VANOS) this week. It's absolutely mint. Well except for one thing so far.

The bulb that lights up the gear selector is out, and I can't find any mention of anyone changing one, or instructions on how to. Am I missing something?
